There are no two ways about it, quitting smoking is extremely difficult but it can, and has been done by millions upon millions of people all over the world. Quitting smoking is difficult but is incredibly rewarding which is why it is so important to stick with any plans you may have implemented in order to help you quit. If you’re serious about saving money, improving your health, improving the health of others around you, and even saving your own life, there are numerous different methods of quitting smoking, some more well known than others. You have the traditional methods such as e-cigs, nicotine gum, and nicotine patches, but as well as that there are also slightly more unconventional methods as well, which we’ll be taking a look at right now.

Challenges and competitions – Sometimes to help us reach our goals, all we require is a little incentive which is why this method is so effective. If you and friends, family, or work colleagues are trying to quit smoking, why not make a competition out of it? It does require full honesty in order to be effective but in the end it is so rewarding. Smokers should be open and honest about how many cigarettes they smoke per day, and how much they spend on them per week. They should then log however many cigarettes they have smoked whilst cutting down, and set aside whatever money remains at the end of the week, compared with times when they weren’t trying to quit. The person who has made the most improvement and has saved the most money over a prolonged period of time will be declared the winner and should receive a prize of some sort as a reward.

Bury them or burn them – This will sound pretty unusual to many of you but there is a decidedly morbid undertone to this method of quitting. Studies have found that the best time to quit smoking is immediately after you make the conscious decision to quit, otherwise you will chain-smoke on the days before you planned to put your plan into action, or you would simply keep telling yourself that you will “quit tomorrow instead”. Here’s where things take a far darker turn. Think about whether you would like to be cremated or buried when you die, and then dispose of the cigarettes in exactly the same way. Burn them if you wish to be cremated, or bury them if you wish to be buried. The reason for this is that you are “killing” your cigarettes before they literally kill you.

Ration them – Say you have a pack of 20 cigarettes in the house and are trying to quit, take out 4 or 5 maximum, and set them aside some place safe. Next, take the remaining cigarettes and dispose of them, perhaps like we mentioned previously. Now, ration the cigarettes for the day. Aim at having one every 3 – 4 hours from the time you wake up until the time you go to sleep and smoke the same number of rationed cigarettes at the same time each day. For the next week, do exactly the same but reduce the number of cigarettes by 1, leaving you with 3 or 4 cigarettes for the day, and so on.
